Training Swords - Medieval

Getting a blunt sword first before for practice before handling a sharp one is generally a good idea. Beginning students of sword arts all the world over usually work with blunted versions of their swords before eventually handling live steel for the same reason you are considering… to keep from accidentally hurting themselves with a sharpened blade. I did the same thing when I first started out learning how to use a sword.

Make sure that whatever you are practicing with is worth using, however. there are some blunted swords out there that aren’t weighed or balanced correctly, and/or are poorly constructed.

Also, if you plan on practicing with others and it includes sparring, the Rawling Synthetic swords are also a good idea.

I hope this helps you.
