What's the ideal length I should choose for a Katana?
While the charts are there to help people figure out what a good blade length would be for them, keep in mind that they are only there are a general resource, and not an end all, be all. When it comes to getting a sword for yourself (or any weapon, in fact), ultimately the right one is the one you feel the most comfortable with, and sometimes it may not be the norm. It all boils down to what you are most comfortable with.
Basically, these charts are guidelines to help you choose something that works for you. Usually they suggest a particular blade length for particular heights because things like sword weight and arm lengths are being considered. But ultimately, you should have an idea of what you are comfortable with, especially if you’ve handled swords before. There is also nothing wrong with using a slightly shorter sword than what would be considered normal. We’ve had a few fairly tall customers who have ordered ko-katana, and those have a blade length of 22". Again, guidelines can help, but in the end it comes down to your own preferences.
Bottom line, if a 28" blade is what you want instead of a 29", feel free to go with that length. :)
